Fragrance Notes - The Secret of a Perfume
The secret of a perfume is the right mix of scents.
Every perfume is made up of several components, which are divided into different notes, the so-called fragrance notes.
The classic fragrance composition is based on the fragrance pyramid . It illustrates the structure of a perfume. The pyramid consists of the top note, the middle note and the base note. The three fragrance phases are harmoniously coordinated with one another.
The top note is the scent that you notice when you first sniff it, immediately after spraying it, and which determines the first impression. It forms the top of the fragrance pyramid and has a stimulating, invigorating and refreshing effect. The top note unfolds immediately, but it is the shortest episode of the fragrance phases. It is light and evaporates quickly. The scent of the top note usually decides whether we like the perfume or not.
Typical top notes : bergamot, lemongrass, mint, orange, rosemary, thyme, lemon
The heart note defines the actual character of the fragrance blend because it combines the top and base notes and rounds off the scent. It is harmonising and warming. We usually only smell the heart note a few minutes after spraying it on, but the scent does not evaporate as quickly as the top note.
Typical heart notes: geranium, jasmine, chamomile, lavender, carnation, neroli, rose, ylang-ylang
The base note is the scent that is perceived last. It is also known as a fixative because it gives the scent persistence and depth. The heart and top notes build on it. The base is usually made up of intensely scented oils that can be perceived over a long period of time.
Typical base notes: patchouli, rose, sandalwood, vanilla, vetiver, cedar
When making perfume, start with your base notes, then add your heart notes and finally your top notes.
Make your own fragrances
Everyone has their own ideas and favorites when it comes to fragrance. A fragrance has to suit us and ideally characterize our character and our attitude to life. That is probably why it is so difficult to find the right fragrance for yourself. With essential oils, we can easily make our own perfume that reveals something else in addition to the individual fragrance: the wearer of the fragrance is a lover of natural cosmetics.
Ingredients:
wine spirit
At least 3 different essential oils
a few drops of jojoba , almond or avocado oil
Required tools:
beaker for mixing
small funnel to transfer the perfume mixture
Glass bottle – preferably a dark glass bottle
How do I make a perfume?
Choose your fragrances. Mix them into the alcohol, stirring constantly. Add a few drops of jojoba, almond or avocado oil to bind the fragrances better in the alcohol. Now pour your perfume into the bottle! Close the bottle and shake it vigorously. Leave the mixture to stand for two weeks - during this time the perfume matures, the fragrances dissolve in the alcohol and combine with each other. You can support this process by shaking it regularly.
Make sure that the bottle is odor-free and dry! You should store your perfume in a cool, shady place. A dark glass ensures that the perfume lasts longer and protects it from light.
Recipe suggestion
Summer Breeze: 10 drops lemon , 10 drops lavender , 10 drops sandalwood, 2 drops almond oil, 10 ml alcohol
Perfume with lavender scent: 10 drops lavender , 10 drops lemon, 2 drops lemongrass , 2 drops jojoba oil, 10 ml alcohol
Perfume as a body spray
If you want to use the perfume as a body spray, dilute the alcohol solution with distilled water. In this case, you will need a spray bottle instead of a glass bottle.
